KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The American Royal has partnered with The Coterie Theatre for a production titled “Horse Power: Tom Bass’ American Story.” Performances will run from September 11 through October 6.
The two entities partnered on the production as part of the American Royal’s 125th anniversary. It showcases the legacy of Tom Bass, a Missouri-born slave who overcame adversity throughout his life to become a world-renowned horseman. Bass had a unique talent for training and showing horses. He was a co-founder of the first American Royal horse show in 1905 and was highly competitive in the American Royal equine events for years to come.
“The Tom Bass story is an important one for the American Royal,” said Lindsey Patterson Smith, American Royal board of directors vice chairman. “As the credited founder of our equine show, the impact of his ingenuity, grit and resilience is still celebrated today. We are thrilled for the opportunity to work with The Coterie Theatre to share this little-known story with the next generation. We couldn’t think of a better way to share the story of hardship turned international fame.”
The opening night performance, scheduled for September 13 at 7 p.m., will feature special equine-themed activations and a panel discussion with American Royal stakeholders.
“The Coterie Theatre is ecstatic to join with the American Royal in such a creative and unique way, honoring their 125th celebration,” said Khalia Davis, The Coterie Theatre producing artistic director. “Here at The Coterie, we see our responsibility as stewards of stories that showcase the vast diversity of the human experience. The play, written by playwright Michelle Tyrene Johnson, will allow our audiences to see how Tom Bass’ struggles exist to this day through a parallel contemporary story about a young Black girl who loves horses as much as he did. We couldn’t think of a better way to uplift Bass’ legacy than by creating this opportunity for thousands of audience members to enjoy.”
The performances are recommended for families with children ages nine and older. View performance times, special performances and purchase tickets at thecoterie.org. Learn more about the American Royal’s 125th anniversary at americanroyal.com/about/125th-anniversary.
