Amateur Halter Stallion classes are flying by at the 2014 All American Quarter Horse Congress, and we have numerous winners to congratulate. First up, Anne Prince was named the Congress Champion in Amateur Weanling Stallions with BPF Grand Slam. The Reserve Congress Champion and limited winner was Robin Robinett with Never Tell A Secret.

In the Amateur Yearling Stallions class, Kyle Hughes Sr. was named the Congress Champion with the home-bred Gee I Jo. The Reserve Champion was Steve Jensen with TF Doctor Cool. In the Amateur 2-Year-Old Stallions class, Maggie Bellville led Kudoz to a win followed by Karen Johnson with Mo Secrets in Reserve.

The Amateur 3-Year-Old Stallions class was won by Anne Prince with the unanimous Open Grand Champion winner from last week with trainer, Dewey Smith, PF Premo. The Reserve Champion was Gary Louks with Lookinat The Sierras. In the Amateur Aged Stallions class, Dr. Steve Jensen was named the Congress Champion with Ecredible. Coming in Reserve was Shelby Tibbitts with Entrepreneurs Touch.

We caught up with both Kyle Hughes Sr. and Anne Prince following their big wins. For Hughes, the last time he was in the winner’s circle at the Quarter Horse Congress was 16 years ago.

“I won the Open and Amateur up here in 1998,” he says. “We took the same mare to the World Show and won the Open and Amateur out there with her [that same year].”

“This colt’s mother is named Incredible Fairytale, and she has approximately 300 points on her. The colt is by Gianni. We of course raised him; he’s homegrown.”

In charge of fitting Gee I Jo is Hughes’ son, Kyle Hughes Jr., who was ready at the exit gate to give his father a congratulatory pat on the back. Just last week, Ronnie Casper led the stallion to a win in the open division of the class.

“When he was born, he was a big colt,” Hughes says. “He had a lot of size to him. He had the looks the day he hit the ground; he’s a real pretty colt.”

Anne Prince has been very busy today, showing in multiple classes and achieving two wins. First, she was named the Congress Champion in Amateur Weanling Stallions with BPF Grand Slam. Then, she placed fourth in Amateur Yearling Stallions with PF The Only One. Finally, Prince brought out the big boy, PF Premo, for a unanimous win in the Amateur 3-Year-Old Stallions.

“I was very pleased [with the weanling stallion],” Prince says. “We’ve been back and forth with the colt that was Reserve and won the limited all year long at the futurities, so we kind of knew that was probably where it was going to be. It was really nice to end up on top today, but that’s a really nice colt also.”

When it came time to exhibit the unanimous winner in the Amateur 3-Year-Old Stallions class, PF Premo, Prince was definitely feeling the pressure.

“The crowd just loves him,” she says. “He’s just a gentle giant. He was unanimous Grand Champion last week with Dewey [Smith], so the pressure is on. I went out there and had scrambled eggs for brains just now. I was so nervous. Everybody has worked so hard. We’ve bred and raised this colt, and he means a lot to our program. I feel a lot of pressure to repeat Dewey’s great win.”

As this piece was being written, Prince and PF Premo rose to the occasion and were named the unanimous Grand Champion Amateur Stallion pair. The Reserve Grand Champion Stallion is Ecredible with Dr. Steve Jensen at the lead.
