Historic flooding that devastated Louisiana in August has not only damaged the lives of thousands of people, but many animals as well. Several organizations within the equine community have created donation opportunities in an effort to help equines that have been displaced, become sick or injured, and left hungry due to the flooding. Absorbine® has contributed towards the following fundraising efforts, and invites horse lovers across the country to learn more about relief efforts in Louisiana and donate to these reputable charities, helping horses in dire need.
The American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) Foundation and other Louisiana veterinary organizations are seeking donations to assist with the rescue and care for horses affected by the flooding. The AAEP Foundation includes a disaster relief fund that assists horses impacted by floods, fires, and other natural disasters through preparedness and training. To make a donation to the AAEP Foundation, visit http://foundation.aaep.org.
The Louisiana State University (LSU) Foundation is committed to assisting with immediate veterinary needs of animals affected by flooding. Absorbine® has supported the critical emergency work performed by veterinarians by providing products that can provide some relief to these horses, including Absorbine® Veterinary Liniment, UltraShield® fly spray, and Fungasol® antimicrobial products. To make a donation to the LSU Foundation, visit www.lsufoundation.org.
Another critical issue facing horses in flooded areas is access to hay; many are in desperate need of food. Hay contributions can be made through The Voice of Louisiana Agriculture, which has set up a hay clearing house for donations. To learn more, visit http://voiceoflouisianaagriculture.org/lfbf-hay-clearinghouse/. Monetary donations towards hay are also welcome. Quality Feeds in Covington, LA is also working to help a range of affected areas get access to hay. To learn more and make a donation, Quality Feeds can be reached at (985) 893-3889.
Relief work continues in Louisiana, and it is through the generosity of others donating time, labor, money, and resources that reconstruction is possible. The national equine community has responded with those contributions and more, never forgetting that natural disasters affect animals, too. “It is devastating to see the destruction flooding has caused Southern Louisiana, and we really wanted to help where we could,” says Chris Jacobi, President of Absorbine®. “Many horses are suffering in these conditions. Whether it is providing products that can support their recovery, donating hay to help feed them, or supporting the veterinary organizations working tirelessly to give them care, there are plenty of ways to pitch in and support relief. We encourage fellow horse lovers to consider the ongoing efforts in Louisiana, and make a donation where they are able.”
