With a change in dates as well as show management for the 2014 Gateway Classic, there was no telling how the show would fare over a very busy Memorial Day weekend. However, per show management’s confirmation that the event racked up a whopping 5,000 entries this year, it’s safe to say that the show far exceeded expectations.

With six full AQHA shows and a special event trail, horsemanship, and western pleasure show, the Gateway Classic saw many class sizes reach into the double digits. Entries for the special event and first split/combined show, alone, almost equaled entries for the entire circuit last year. Continuing with a familiar trend this show season, some of the highest entry counts could be found in AQHA leveled classes.

  • L1 Trail- 23
  • L3 Senior Trail- 23
  • L1 Amateur Western Pleasure- 25
  • L1 Western Pleasure- 16
  • L1 Amateur Horsemanship- 18
  • Select Western Pleasure- 15
  • Amateur Performance Halter Geldings- 15
  • Performance Halter Geldings- 20
  • Amateur Showmanship-21

Judging the show over Memorial Day weekend were Merle Arbo, Kelly McDowall, Beckey Schooler, Michelle Tidwell, Andrea Simons, Jessica Gilliam, and Rusty Green. In addition to taking a moment to honor our brave troops on Memorial Day Monday, there were two other special events that took place at the show. Mark Harrell and judge Jessica Gilliam both celebrated their birthdays over the weekend in Lake St. Louis, Missouri. Happy Birthday Mark and Jessica!
