The Buffalo Soldier: An American Horseman will be on exhibit February 18 to April 30 at the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame & Museum in Amarillo. The exhibits tells the story of the African American soldiers of the 9th and 10th cavalry and their equine partners marching into the unsettled American West, helping build and protect the country we know and love today.
The history of the Buffalo Soldier and the American Quarter Horse will come alive through The Living History field trip for students, grades 3 through 12, on February 27 and 28.
From 7-9 p.m. on February 28, the Grand Hall of the Museum will be turned into a Buffalo Soldier’s campsite from the late 1800s. Visitors of all ages are invited to listen as historical interpreter Henry Crawford shares the stories that explain the partnership of the African American soldier and the American Quarter Horse.
The Museum is open 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Admission is free for AQHA members.
The Museum is a great place to bring Panhandle visitors where they can experience a piece of the West; it’s a place for horse lovers of all ages to learn more about the breed; and it’s a quiet sanctuary in which to appreciate some outstanding artwork.
