Monica Baker and Good Bars Only Win APHA Yearling Longe Line, “Parker” Returns For Tonight’s Sale

After a full two hours of a very tough Yearling Longe Line class this evening at the 2013 APHA World Show, Monica Baker and Good Bars Only were named the World Champions. The Reserve World Champion was Carly Veldman Parks with Sirtainly No Doubt for Morgan Illic. Rounding out the top three was Marty Dixon with The Red Factor for Judy Moyer.

Baker was at the lead tonight for owner, Angela Finegan of Forest Grove, Oregon. Baker led a second horse in the class, also owned by Finegan, named Vital Signs Afire to a seventh place finish. Finegan plans to show her recently-crowned World Champion gelding named “Parker” tomorrow in the Amateur Yearling Longe Line, if he doesn’t sell in the Farnam Breeders Sale this evening.

“He’s actually in the sale tonight,” Baker says. “I think he should wear his neck ribbon in the sale!”

Parker is a gelding by By Appointment Only and out of a Mac’s Good and Plenty mare named She’s Plenty Good. Baker explains that Finegan did most of the foundational training on the yearling before sending him to her facility for a bit of fine-tuning before the World Show.

“Angela bought him as a yearling around January, and she did most of the training with him,” she says. “I’ve had him for probably the last two months in training. She had a lot of the basics already trained.”

“I’ve shown him three or four times this year, and Angela will show tomorrow night. We kind of tag-team him at the shows lately.”

Baker says Parker’s size, substance, and calm personality are the attributes that helped him stand out as a superior longe line prospect early in the year.

“He’s big,” she says. “I’d say he’s about 15.1 hands. He’s definitely ready to put a saddle on for sure! He’s very balanced in the way he moves and the way he looks. He has a very quiet personality. He’s not very high energy, and he wants to please. He takes to his job easy.”

“He was the last to go in his group, so he was in there for 30 or 45 minutes before he did anything. I let him lick the wall or do something to where he entertains himself. Then, I make him pay attention right before he’s going to show.”
