It has been a banner day at the 2013 All American Quarter Horse Congress for the acclaimed 7-year-old stallion, Hot Ones Only. Not only did he earn a Congress Championship in Senior Pleasure Driving with Jason Martin, “Bruno” turned right around and won the Senior Hunter Under Saddle with Beth Case in the irons. That’s pretty impressive considering the fact that up until two days before Highpoint Performance Horses left for the show, he wasn’t even entered to compete.
“He wasn’t even supposed to come,” says stallion manager, Christi Christensen. “We ended up having a horse not be able to come two days before we left. Jason called up Tammy and asked if he could take Bruno. He was only supposed to go to the World Show this year.”
Another interesting fact about Bruno’s win in Senior Pleasure Driving is that the performance was a first for Jason Martin.
“This was Jason’s first time to ever show him in the driving,” she says. “Normally, Charlie drives Bruno. Jason showed him today so he could have the opportunity to have a practice run before the World Show.”
Not only is this exceptional young sire on fire here at the Congress, his foals are holding their own as well.
“His babies have been doing really great here,” she says. “A couple of days ago, one of his foals was Reserve in the Non-Pro Hunter Longe Line, Not Just Anyhoo with Sandy Butler. The fourth place horse, Whoos That Lady, is also by Bruno. In the Open Hunter Longe Line, there were two in the top ten. There is one for sure in the Masters Hunter Under Saddle with Sandra Morgan. Beth Case is showing Hoo Loves Ya Baby in the 3-Year-Old Open. There are actually a lot of his foals showing in the 3-year-old classes this week.”
Considering Bruno’s impressive size and stature, one might think that he would cross better on hunter-type mares. However, we learned from Christensen, that those aren’t the only crosses that work well with this stallion.
“Of course he is going to throw size, but also what a lot of trainers are saying is the foals have no buck when you go to break them out,” she says. “They are really quiet-minded, which is something we need when crossing to our Thoroughbred mares. We have been breeding him to a lot of different horses actually. We bred him to World Champion western pleasure mare, Sleepin In The Rain, and we have a phenomenal yearling coming two-year-old that will just blow you away.”
