AQHA Honorary Vice President, Chuck Lakin, Has Passed

American Quarter Horse Association Honorary Vice President Chuck Lakin, of Prescott, Arizona, died June 29. Lakin was committed to the horse industry and served on many association boards and committees. Lakin was past president of the Arizona Quarter Horse Breeders Association and a life member of AQHA. He was recently inducted into the Arizona Quarter Horse Association Hall of Fame.

Lakin attended the New Mexico Military Institute and the college of agriculture at the University of Arizona before enlisting in the Army. Lakin became a platoon leader and instructor of the Cavalry. He was awarded the Purple Heart and Presidential Unit Citation for his service.

In the 1960s, Lakin founded the Lakin Milling Co., a highly successful feed business sold in several states and overseas.

Well known in his community, Lakin was a life member and past president of the Maricopa County Sherriff’s Posse, founder and past president of the Estrella Rotary Club a director of the Arizona Horsemen’s Association, past president of the University of Arizona Agriculture “100” Council, member of the Arizona Farm Bureau Federation, board member of Arizona National Livestock Show, member of the Arizona Agribusiness Council and past chairman of Arizona Cattle Feeders Association.

Lakin is survived by Maxine, his loving wife of 67 years; four daughters Linda McCann (Jim) Charlene Bergland (Eric) Sally Lindsay (Don) Patty Carroll (Larry); 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; nieces; and nephews.

A memorial service to celebrate Lakin’s life will be held in Phoenix in the fall. Arrangements will be handled by Post Scripts by Posey.
