The Breeders’ Halter Futurity is an event like no other. As the highest paying stand-alone Halter event in history, the futurity has awarded millions to competitors since its inception in 2010.

“That first year, we paid out $240,000, and it kept going up from there,” says Event Manager Karen Kennedy. “We’ve been paying out a million-and-a-half for the past 5 years.”

The first Breeders Halter Futurity (BHF) was actually just a set of classes held at the Iowa Quarter Horse Show and Futurity. Later, the BHF would obtain their own show dates, which put Des Moines, Iowa on the map as the place to be in September.

Jim and Georgia Snow have been involved with the BHF since the very beginning. Their stallion, My Intention, was just four years old when he was nominated to the futurity back in 2010. He’s 18 years old now, and a $4,000,000 sire to boot, something Georgia said likely wouldn’t have happened without the big prize purses of the Breeder’s Halter Futurity.

“I don’t know if anybody realized the magnitude of the effect this futurity would have on the Halter horse industry,” Georgia Snow says. “The people of Iowa have been so receptive, and the Des Moines arena is just the coolest place to show.”

The 2024 BHF is scheduled for September 10-14, and this year there’s even more money up for grabs, a revamped payout structure, and unique class offerings to suit every exhibitor.
