When you look at a list of Beth Case’s career accomplishments: 35 Congress Championships, 14 AQHA World Championships, 47 NSBA World Championships, and 16 NSBA High Point titles, the numbers are so staggering they’re almost hard to comprehend.

If you didn’t know the feisty Texan personally, with her quick wit and sharp tongue, you’d be forgiven for thinking that perhaps she grew up in a family full of horsemen. You might imagine that she was provided with the very best: impeccably bred horses, daily lessons, and top-of-the-line gear.

But she’d be quick to dispel you of that notion, because Beth didn’t grow up in a horse-loving family. She picked stalls and swept alleyways to pay for lessons, and she showed whatever semi-broke, backyard horse she could get her hands on.

“I don’t know why I liked horses as a kid. All I can remember is that I did,” she says. “One time, I was at a friend’s house, and I was hanging over the fence looking at the neighbor’s horses. She asked if I wanted to ride. She put me on an old mare–bareback without a halter. She asked where I took lessons, and I told her it was the first time I’d ever ridden a horse.”
