Around the Rings and Results at Sudden Impulse Show

Friday’s winners at A Sudden Impulse Show at World Equestrian Center!

Today’s A Sudden Impulse Futurity saw NSBA added-money Showmanship and Horsemanship for Amateur and Youth exhibitors, as well as NSBA added-money Green, Junior, and Senior Ranch Riding.  The day also welcomed AQHA competition for Hunter Under Saddle and Equitation, and in the stadium, exhibitors faced off for a NSBA added-money Hunter Derby.

Horsemanship competition was fierce, and Mary Alice Nielson, who began showing The Only Kiss to Envy after her daughter, Caroline Nielson, went to college, won her NSBA Novice Amateur Select Western Horsemanship out of 25 horses.  In fact, it was her first time winning horsemanship.

“It was a really tough pattern for a novice,” Mary Alice says.  “It looked hard on paper, but once you started practicing it, it was doubly hard with all the transitions.  I felt good about my practice last night, but when I got out to the cone to start, what I didn’t anticipate was that I’d have to look way back over my shoulder to look at the judges.”

However, they conquered each element, including a lead change exactly where she wanted it.  She exclaims, “I’m so happy with him!” She explains that she’s also been working very hard on keeping her upper body still, and it has been her main goal.  “Everybody else who has been doing this forever makes it look so easy, and it’s much harder than it looks!” she says.

Taking a look down the list of today’s winners below, one might additionally notice that the NSBA Amateur Walk Trot Horsemanship Champion, Brandy Keller, shares Miss Mesmerized with her daughter, Kinley Keller, who had just cinched a third place right before Brandy’s ride.

Brandy recently began showing Miss Mesmerized, and this was the first time they’ve shown NSBA.  “We just got her registered,” Brandy says, “and we came here to practice, so I’m pleasantly surprised!”  Brandy explains that she’s always a little nervous and today was no exception, but two elements prevailed. “The pattern had an extended jog, and I was really excited about that because it’s one of my favorite maneuvers.  Also, Miss Mesmerized is a point and shoot kind of horse, so she always makes me look good!”
