According to multiple news outlets, 27 horse trainers, veterinarians, and barn staff have been implicated in what is being called the largest horse doping ring to be prosecuted in the United States. Among those listed include Jason Servis, the trainer of Maximum Security, the horse that won the Kentucky Derby but was later disqualified due to a call of interference.
It has been reported that the scheme began in 2017 and was organized by veterinarian, Louis Grasso. Not only were some prescriptions invalid for the performance enhancing drugs administrated to horses, others had fraudulent or misleading labels. More serious allegations indicate that several government agencies were defrauded, in addition to U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
