Chester and Anne Prince’s “Salty” Mare Wins $350,000 La Troienne Stakes on KY Derby Weekend!

The term “salty,” when used in the context of the horse world, typically describes a supremely talented individual with the movement, disposition, and eye appeal to make a determined bid at a championship title. In the case of Chester and Anne Prince, whom many know as leaders in the Halter and now Western and English Performance disciplines, it’s the name of their mare that just won a $350,000 purse during Kentucky Derby weekend!

Salty, a 2014 mare by Quality Road and out of Theycallmeladyluck, by Dixie Union, was piloted by jockey Tyler Gaffalione to win the $350,000 La Troienne Stakes this afternoon at Churchill Downs. She is owned by Gary Barber, Baccari Racing Stable, LLC, and Chester and Anne Prince, and trained by Mark Casse. She was bred and raised by Prince Farms, LLC. and Seclusive Farm, LLC. Chester and Anne still own the filly’s dam and several of her siblings.

Throughout the course of her career, Salty has accumulated 11 starts with four firsts, two seconds, and two thirds, with $688,500 in earnings. In 2018, she has two starts, during which she placed first in both to win $36,000.

During the race, Salty broke out of post position 1 and kept with the pace until the horses entered the stretch. Farrell blocked a run around the turn by Martini Glass; but, that opened up a spot along the rail for Salty, and she sped past the competition to hit the wire at 1:43.78. With her win, she was able to defeat the 3-5 favorite, Abel Tasman, that won the Kentucky Oaks last year, but finished in fourth place today.

In the betting box, Salty paid $10.40 to win, $5 to place, and $3.40 to show.
