10Since 2011, Lucas Oil Products and Protect the Harvest have been on the scene at major equine events to help educate horsemen about the latest legislation that might affect our industry down the road.

The big top is coming down. The cages stand empty. Empty popcorn cartons and deflated balloons litter a once lively midway.

Earlier this year, Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus announced the end of their 146-year run as a beloved, traveling entertainment venue for families across the country. Lucas Oil and Protect the Harvest now pose a question to the horse industry: Could we be next?

The American Story

Lucas Oil has a quintessential American story. It’s an American made company that was founded from the ground up and now has a presence across the country at racecar events, sponsorships for buildings like the Indianapolis’s Lucas Oil Stadium, and now within the agricultural world. “Forrest Lucas grew up with nothing to build what he has today, so he wants to help protect agriculture in America,” explains Shawn Burtenshaw, whose job is business development for Lucas Oil Products. Lucas, a born-and-bred Hoosier, grew up working on a cattle farm. He later purchased his own semi-truck and did long-haul trucking. Within the next 10 years, he purchased more trucks and a convenience store. He became fascinated with mixing oils and additives to improve the gas mileage and overall performance of his vehicles, which led to the creation of Lucas Oil Products.

Lucas and his wife, Charlotte, started Lucas Oil Products with the simple philosophy of producing only the best line of lubricants and additives available. Through innovative product research and development, as well as aggressive marketing programs, Lucas established itself as a top selling additive line in the American truck stop industry. On top of owning a leading oil products company, Lucas owns Lucas Cattle Company, a cattle ranch based in Crossed Timbers, Missouri.
