This spring, the American Quarter Horse Association solicited host-site bids for the 2016 Zoetis AQHA Versatility Ranch Horse and AQHA Cowboy Mounted Shooting World Championships to be held in spring 2017. The first Zoetis VRH World was held in 2008 in Denver, during the National Western Stock Show, then relocated in 2011 to Houston, during the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo.
After reviewing the bids and exhibitor survey results, along with countless hours of discussion and evaluation, the AQHA Executive Committee decided to keep the 2016 Zoetis VRH and AQHA CMS world shows in Houston, in conjunction with the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo. The shows are tentatively scheduled for March 22-26, 2017.
“To make the best decision for our members, we need adequate time to evaluate our exhibitors’ wants and needs,” said Pete Kyle, AQHA chief show officer. “Several members suggested in the survey that they would like to see changes made to the show. To ensure we’re making the most well-informed decisions, we are conducting more research and will solicit host-site bids for the 2017 Zoetis VRH and AQHA CMS world shows later in the year.”
“We are grateful for the wonderful bids submitted by facilities all over the country, and we look forward to ensuring we make the best decision possible for the show and our exhibitors in the future,” Kyle continued.
The Executive Committee also reviewed and approved the points required to qualify for the Zoetis VRH and AQHA CMS world shows.

AQHA will also hold the first Zoetis AQHA Ranching Heritage Challenge Finals in conjunction with the 2016 Zoetis VRH and AQHA CMS world shows. Ranching Heritage Challenges highlight the versatility, soundness and willing attitude of American Quarter Horses that are bred by AQHA Ranching Heritage Breeders. To be eligible to compete in the challenges, horses must have been bred by a Ranching Heritage Breeder, plus all payments must be complete. In 2016, there is more than $90,000 in prize money offered during the six qualifying challenges and finals.
To qualify for the finals, a horse must simply compete at any one of the 2016 Challenges. Horses that competed at the 2016 Challenge in January at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo are already qualified for the Ranching Heritage Challenge Finals.
