May 20, 2016 — Houston, TX. — High school graduates pledged to continue their academic education in Texas as they each received an $18,000 scholarship from the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo at the Area Go Texan Scholarship Banquet, Friday, May 20.

“Once again, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo™ demonstrates its tremendous reach by rewarding the hard work of high school seniors that reside within 68 counties that faithfully support the show,” said Joel Cowley, president and CEO.  “By investing in Texas youth, we ensure a brighter future.”

Show officials and volunteers hosted 78 Area Go Texan scholarship recipients from 68 different counties surrounding the Houston metropolitan area. Each student received a four-year, $18,000 scholarship, for a total of $1,404,000 committed to this program. Each of the 68 participating Area Go Texan counties awards a scholarship to one of the county’s graduating high school seniors, and an additional 10 awards are given at large to eligible students within these counties.

Scholarships are awarded to students who meet the program requirements and demonstrate academic potential, leadership and financial need. All recipients also must attend a Texas college or university.

The Area Go Texan scholarships represent a portion of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo’s annual commitment of nearly $26 million to scholarships, research, endowments, calf scramble participants, junior show exhibitors, School Art participants and other educational programs.
