Change of any kind can be scary, so when it comes to changing divisions in the show pen from Youth or Novice Youth to Amateur, exhibitors facing the switch are understandably hesitant. For some, the nerves associated with the step up can really shake their confidence. We talked to three exhibitors who are headed into their last Youth World Show this year and asked them to share their feelings about this sometimes daunting trans-ition. Riley Walburn – Up and Coming Youth Exhibitor

Eleven-year-old Riley Walburn is quickly making a name for herself in the show pen. As the middle child of parents Katelyn Rice Carruth and Seth Carruth of Beebe, Arkansas, she has a five- year-old sister, Abbi, and a thirteen-year-old brother, Connor. The active fifth grader at Liberty Christian School loves school, taking trips with her family, swimming, and riding in the family’s side-by-side, but her main love is horses. It’s a passion she shares with her maternal grandparents, Butch and Robin Rice of Beebe, Arkansas, who have fostered her interest from the moment they saw her interact with their racehorses when Riley was just a tot.

Amateur Dawn Strohecker and her gelding, Illicit Intention, earned top honors in 2022 as 3-time AQHA National High Point Champions. They earned their place at the top of the year-end list for the highly competitive Level 3 Open Geldings, Open Junior Geldings, and Level 3 Amateur Geldings classes. In fact, as of May 2023 Ilicit Intention is now My Intention’s highest point earning progeny according to Q Stallions.
