The American Quarter Horse Association is a proud sponsor of the 2014 Road to the Horse International. This year’s event is March 13-16 in Lexington, Kentucky, and will showcase trainers from across the globe.
The 2014 Road to the Horse Wild Card competition features seven horsemen who chose a horse last year from the AQHA remuda, a group of 3-year-old American Quarter Horses with little-to-no prior handling. The seven competitors have spent the past 12 months building a relationship with their selected partner in preparation for the Wild Card competition at the March event.
The winner will immediately become a 2014 Road to the Horse contender, competing alongside Dan Steers of Australia, Jonathan Field of Canada and Antoine Cloux of Switzerland in the World Championship of Colt Starting. They’ll have limited amounts of time over three days in which to train a colt, with emcees describing their work and interviewing the competitors to help spectators follow along.
The American Quarter Horses are selected from the legendary Four Sixes Ranch, an AQHA Ranching Heritage Breeder from Guthrie, Texas, where the horses are carefully bred for cow sense, speed and agility. The Four Sixes is one of the original Zoetis-AQHA Best Remuda Award winners. The ranch has built time-tested pedigrees for more than 140 years and provides Road to the Horse with some of the finest-bred American Quarter Horses.
At Road to the Horse, spectators witness each clinician’s horsemanship abilities as they saddle, bridle and ride the 3-year-olds through a series of obstacles, including a grand finale trail course that will determine the 2014 World Champion Colt Starter.
