NRHA news release by: Christa Morris – The 2014 National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Derby Show not only hosts one of the most lucrative reining aged events in the world, but it also provides two slates of NRHA classes for all levels of riders. A total of 46 states and 21 countries are represented at this year’s show which is the largest NRHA Derby in recorded history.

Silver Spurs Equine 7 & Up Non Pro
NRHA also welcomed the running of “7 & Up” classes for horses age seven and older in the $15,000-added Silver Spurs Equine 7 & Up Non Pro.

More than 100 horses entered the Jim Norick Coliseum Arena yesterday in the first go, first section of the NRHA Derby Open. The winning horse of the NRHA Derby level (L) 4 open division, to be determined on June 28, is guaranteed to earn $60,000 in addition to a $5,000 gift certificate from Twister Trailer, Bob’s Custom Saddle, Montana Silversmiths buckle, Rios of Mercedes boots, Purina feed, Platinum Performance CJ, Classic Equine pad, Classic Equine skid boots, SmartPak gift card, Pard’s Western Shop gift card, Kyle Tack gift certificate, a pad from Center Back Pads and Vetericyn.
Americasnextgunmodel and Deary – L4 Open Leaders
Leading the $215,000-added L4 open division were the 2012 NRHA Futurity Champions Americasnextgunmodel (Gunner x Cee Dun It Do It by Hollywood Dun It) and Casey Deary (Weatherford, Texas; $671,100 NRHA LTE). Deary, an NRHA Professional, piloted the Arcese Quarter Horses USA mare to a score of 227. To date, the 2011 NRHA / Markel Insurance Futurity Sales consignment has earned more than $281,000 in NRHA competition. David Silva, Sr. nominated Americasnextgunmodel to the NRHA Nomination Program when she was a weanling.
The second-highest score of the day (225.5) also went to a horse ridden by Deary, Freckles Got Ashiner (Smart Shiner x Scats Frecklefoot, nominated by Sheryl Kaefer). The stallion owned by Dealer Auctions, Inc. and Vincent/Lynn Maffuci has racked up a total of $73,000 in NRHA Lifetime Earnings thus far. Freckles Got Ashiner is an NRHA / Markel Insurance Futurity Sales Graduate.
Footwork Revolution and Bell – L3 Open Leaders
Footwork Revolution (Einsteins Revolution x Fancy Footwork, nominated by Troop Quarter Horses) and Brian Bell (Denton, Texas) edged out the field in the L3 open division with a score of 222.5 from the judges. Brian, an NRHA Professional, owns the stallion that has already earned nearly $39,000 including finalist honors in the L4 and L3 open divisions at the 2013 NRHA Futurity. Footwork Revolution was consigned to the 2011 NRHA / Markel Insurance Futurity Sales.
Sheza Smart Wimpy and Rushing – L2 Open Leaders
Leading the L2 open division was Sheza Smart Wimpy (Wimpys Little Step x Chicks And Chex) and Ryan Rushing (Whitesboro, Texas; $58,800 NRHA LTE). They rode to a score of 221.5 for owners Tami Nelson and Jan Fleet. Nelson nominated the 2009 mare that has earned nearly $12,000 including reserve championship honors in the L3 open division at the 2012 NRHA Cowtown Classic Pre-Futurity.
Juice On The Luice and Fitzpatrick – L1 Open Leaders
In L1 open division, a score of 220 landed Juice On The Luice (Smart Like Juice x Sugartime Sailor) and Colin James Fitzpatrick (Grandview, Texas; $10,800 NRHA LTE) on the top of the leader board. Caroline Calais is the owner and Debra Wenger is the nominator of the 2009 gelding.

With $650,000 in estimated added money, the NRHA Derby welcomes thousands of spectators, exhibitors and horses attend the event each year. The Derby is one of two major events presented by NRHA each year in Oklahoma City and includes two full slates of ancillary reining classes in addition to the aged-event action.
