The 2014 Breeders Halter Futurity and National Halter Championship kicked off bright and early this morning in Des Moines, Iowa, and the first champion of the show has already been crowned! A big congratulations goes to the winner of the Junior Weanling Colts and Geldings, Get Me Some Of That, led by JT Mitchell and owned by Kelli Butler.
Other promising young halter horses by stallions like Fearles, Secret Gunfighter, The Exceptional One, PTMA Star Kid, CK Kid, My Intention, Ikon, Telasecret, Kid Coolsified, Grandslam Touchdown, and The Home Run Kid will be battling for the top spots in a wide variety of classes spread out over the four day event. On the schedule for today are the following classes:
Taking the judges seats for the event are John Boxell, Jim Fuller, Clint Fullerton, Kenny Hall, Bob Kail, Debbie Kail, Chip Knost, Tommy Manion, Terry Sartain, and John Shepard. This group will have the unenviable task of selecting the winners, out of a very competitive field, that will receive bragging rights, stunning trophies, and huge checks. How huge you say? For example, the new 2-Year-Old Amateur and Open class payout will spread $25,000 over ten places.
Then, the overall Amateur Champion of Champion class (which will take place on Saturday evening along with the Open Champion of Champions class) will present a whopping $25,000 to the winner! The total earnings for the Amateur Champion will be $32,500. Furthermore, enhanced owner/breeder/exhibitor incentives have been added this year in Amateur Weanling classes. Take a gander at those payouts…
In addition, some incredible prizes will be up for grabs, like one year’s use of a horse trailer, donated by Twin Cities Featherlite and Gary and Tammy Raak, that will be presented to both the Breeders Halter Futurity High Point Amateur and National Halter Championship High Point Amateur.
As always, the Breeders Halter Futurity and National Halter Championship strive to maintain a high level of excellence, fairness of judging, and level playing field that have become hallmarks of both programs. As a result, this year, a new Anabolic Steroid Drug Testing Policy was implemented and random testings will be conducted during the show.
According to show management, “In the event of a positive test, the Owner, Trainer, and Exhibitor of the horse will all be held responsible.”
