2013 NRHA Collegiate Reining Championship Wrap-up

NRHA press release by: Marie Klimova The National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Derby hosted the North America’s top collegiate riders in the NRHA Collegiate Reining Championship. The championship consisted of 12 riders: four from the National Collegiate Equestrian Association (NCEA), four from the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) and four selected by NRHA.

One entry rose above the rest of the field to win the championship title: Mckenzie Lantz and Spook Goes Hollywood donated to the competition by Matthew Armenta. They marked a 148 for the win. Lantz will be a senior majoring in sports management at the University of Georgia this coming fall. A native of Fremont, Mich., Lantz represented NCEA in the Championship.

Rebekah Irish (University of Findlay) placed second in the championship scoring 146.0 with Brilliant Guns owned by Charley Thiel.

This year, the riders selected from the pool of collegiate NRHA members were Rebecca Murray (Texas A&M University), Lauren Tieche (University of Georgia), Jenna Blumer (Oklahoma State University), Austin Griffith (The Ohio State University).

The NCEA sent its top four reiners from the 2012-2013 season to the championship: McKenzie Lantz (University of Georgia), Katy Krshka (Oklahoma State University), Indy Roper (Auburn University) and Laura Dunlavy (South Dakota State University).

IHSA was represented by riders who placed in top four places in Open Reining at the IHSA Finals: Rebekah Irish (University of Findlay), Blair Childress (North Carolina State University), Leah DiGioia (State University of New York College of Agriculture and Technology at Cobleskill) and  Caleb Roberts (Ohio University Southern).

The National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Derby hosted the High School Reining Championship for NRHA and Interscholastic Equestrian Association (IEA) members. At the end of the class, Julia Purus won the championship with a score of 148.5 aboard Spook Goes Hollywood donated to the competition by Matthew Armenta.

Purus, a high school senior from Purcell, Okla., qualified to compete in the championship through her involvement with NRHA. After high school, she plans to attend Oklahoma State University and be a member of the National Collegiate Equestrian Association (NCEA) Team.

Benjamin Beckett, a junior from Dublin, Ohio, took second place on Crank Up The Band scoring 146.5 donated to the competition by Brett Walters.

The championship class brought together the top four riders from the Individual Open Reining at the IEA National Western Championship (held during the NRHA Derby) and the top four riders from the 2013 NRHA 14-18 Youth World Championship standings in an exciting “catch ride” competition where riders show unfamiliar horses graciously donated by supporters.

Founded in 1966, the National Reining Horse Association is a nonprofit association dedicated to promoting and encouraging the development of and public interest in the sport of reining. The focus is on developing and maintaining suitable standards of performance and judging and in providing a fun filled, family-oriented atmosphere.

IEA was formed, in 2002, and organized to promote and improve the quality of equestrian competition and instruction available to middle and secondary school students. Its purpose is to set minimum standards for competition, provide information concerning the creation and development of school associated equestrian sport programs, and to generally promote the common interests of safe riding instruction and competition, and education on matters related to equestrian competition at the middle and secondary school levels.
