Summer is fully in swing and exhibitors are experiencing toasty temperatures and a bit of rain in Berrien Springs, Michigan during the start of the Jeff Bujack Quarter Horse Show, the precursor to the Tom Powers Futurity, which begins on Thursday. In 2012, the Tom Powers event awarded a total of $256,233, so there’s no telling what the payout will be for this year’s competition.
While competitors are anxiously awaiting the start of the Futurity on Thursday, many are taking advantage of the AQHA/MQHA approved Quarter Horse show that began with a special event on Sunday. Yesterday marked the beginning of the halter, showmanship, hunter under saddle, and equitation classes, and today it’s time for western riding, trail, western pleasure, and horsemanship.
On Wednesday, exhibitors will get a little break with a day off from competition and a brand new event that many are looking forward to. At approximately 4:00 p.m. tomorrow afternoon, there will be a “Happy Hour” presentation of 2 year-old and older horses for sale in the show ring. Donations will go to benefit the NSBA Trainer Crisis Fund.
On Saturday afternoon, competitors will enjoy watching the 2-Year-Old Maiden Stakes class, bidding on prospects in the Yearling Stakes Sale, and dining during a pig roast sponsored by Equine Sports Medicine and Tom and Dominique Powers. Donations for this event will also go to benefit the NSBA Trainer Crisis Fund.
