White House Recommends Removal of Horse Slaughter Funding in Proposed 2015 Budget

HSUS edited press release

President Obama’s FY 2015 budget proposal includes a request for Congress to continue the prohibition on spending tax dollars to inspect horse slaughter plants. The ban—which is strongly supported by The Humane Society of the United States—prevents horses from being slaughtered in the U.S. for human consumption.

A similar spending prohibition was put in place from 2005 until 2011 and then re-instated in the FY 2014 omnibus spending bill passed by Congress in January. The restriction on funding has effectively shut the door to the horse slaughter industry on U.S. soil.
