Understand Equine Brain Function to Improve Your Horsemanship

Filed under: Health & Training |

EBH book cover

What do you get when a fifth-generation horseman teams up with a neuroscientist? Though it sounds like the intro to a joke, it’s actually a winning combination.

Well-known horseman and clinician Martin Black paired up with Dr. Stephen Peters, a neuropsychologist who specializes in brain functioning, to publish Evidence-Based Horsemanship. EBH, as it’s commonly called, combines Peters’ understanding of brain function with Black’s keen observation of subtle horse behavior to create “best practices” in all areas of horse training and care. Together they explore everything from how a horse’s past experiences affect its current behavior to how/when chemicals are released in the horse’s brain and the impact of those chemicals on the behavior of the horse. Most importantly, the pair explains how to use the different neurochemical states to our advantage when working with our equine partners.

Though the book has been one of the best-kept secrets in the equine community for the past year, it’s a secret no longer. Click here to purchase the book.

The two are actively scheduling seminars across the country, including one in Oregon in May, and even have a DVD due out in late spring.

Evidence-Based Horsemanship seminars are designed to give equine enthusiasts of all disciplines a unique learning experience that is valid for all horses and any breed. Evidence-Based Horsemanship combines science and the understanding of brain function with an empirical understanding of the subtleties of a horse’s behaviors, reactions, and chemical states. This is an excellent opportunity to explore and deepen your understanding of horses from two distinguished professionals with decades of experience in their respective fields.

These Educational Seminars are an interactive learning approach which will combine science and empirical observation through classroom, multi-media presentations, discussion, demonstration and observations of horses, and horse brain dissection.
