Competition is well underway at the 2017 Little Futurity at the James B. Hunt Complex in Raleigh, NC. The 13th annual Futurity is being held in conjunction with the Tar Heel Triple Classic, June 8-15th, with a new format this year that provides nine sets of AQHA points within an eight-day format instead of 10. Judges for the Little Futurity are Sara Simons, Carly Veldman-Parks, Kelly McDowall, Carla McMullin, Clay MacLeod, John Tuckey, Besty Tuckey, and Jan Hoskins-Hay.
The Tar Heel began with a 4-day show that was sponsored by the North Carolina Quarter Horse Youth Association. The fun began early with a Move-In Day meal of sandwiches, chips, brownies, and ice cold refreshment. Throughout the first few days of the show, the NCQHYA Snack Shak offered shaved ice, popsicles, and watermelon slices. The Little Futurity Exhibitor Social will take place today at 5:30 pm and the theme is Mexican Monday! Tomorrow, Little Futurity sponsors will be treated to Taco Tuesday.
In addition to 52 Futurity classes, The Little Futurity has added $8,500 in Trail classes that will be run on Tim Kimura-designed courses. Specialty slot classes include the Southern Oaks Novice Horse Slot class, the Non-Pro 3 and Over $7,500 Limited Horse Western Pleasure Slot class, and the Winehurst $10,000 Limited Horse Western Pleasure. The Southern Oaks Novice Horse Slot class will take place this evening, and, new this year, any age novice horse can compete. Also, there will be an inside purse awarded to the horse that has won less than $1,000 prior to the start of the Futurity.
