When Super Select Competitor Rodger Call was interviewed on camera by The Equine Chronicle after winning the L3 Select Pleasure Driving at the 2024 AQHA World Championship Show with Unforgettable to Me, he said modestly, “We had one of our very good drives today.” This humble competitor put in a stellar performance and when asked what he likes about Pleasure Driving, he joked, “After I turned 82, my daughter said, ‘No more jumping for you, but you can at least do the pleasure driving,’ so that’s what I’m doing!”

Indeed, horses have played a major role in Call’s life since his youth in Roseville, California, where his father was heavily involved in Quarter Horses. He recalls, “My father imported some of the first King Ranch horses into California. I started riding at the age of eight, riding in the penning alley at the auction yard.” Those miles in the saddle helping his father with the auction horses gave the young horseman a solid base for competitive riding that would come along in his teens. He says, “When I was a teenager, we would go to Friday night jackpot roping events. I was better at heading than heeling. Then, when I got married, the first thing my wife, Ann, wanted to do was ride in the grand entry at the Fort Worth Stock Show.”

The couple became very involved with Quarter Horses and competition, making friends throughout the industry and competing around the country from coast to coast. Call has high praise for the American Quarter Horse, saying, “I’ve been around Quarter Horses all my life. They absorb training better than other breeds, so I have continued to stick with Quarter Horses. They are also incredibly versatile.”
