50 riders, 10 teams, a group of generous bidders, a handful of semi-cooperative donkeys, (and likely a few adult libations) and the NSBA Crisis Fund Donkey Race was a hit at the Arizona Sun Circuit last night. What convinced trainers and exhibitors to strap on helmets, sign injury releases, and mount up on some stubborn, but agile, donkeys? It was all for a good cause.

Proceeds from the Donkey Race will go to benefit the NSBA Crisis Fund, which was established with the intent of providing financial assistance to professionals in the horse industry during their time of need. Over the years, we have seen trainers seek assistance from the Crisis Fund due to catastrophic floods, horse related injuries, and life-threatening surgery. In order to receive assistance, an applicant must have been a NSBA member for two consecutive years, and the program is limited to any NSBA member, (or immediate family members) who is a horse trainer as their primary occupation.
10 Teams: The High Flying’ Asses, CNN Mortgage, Smart Asses, Haulin’ Asses, The Winning Team, Don Quijotes, D Designs Donkey Dazzlers, Hilljack Asses, Donkey Kong Gone Wrong, and The Hard Asses selected the finest riders on the show grounds for the chance to take home the title of NSBA Donkey Race Champions. There was plenty of enthusiasm, some serious strategy talks along the sidelines, raucous cheering, a few bumps and bruises, and plenty of laughs.
The teams included:
Team #1- High Flyin’ Asses, Owner- Lainie DeBoer
Team #2- CNN Mortgage, Owner- Chris Lagerblade
Team #3- Smart Asses, Owner- Keith McDonough
Team #4- Haulin Asses, Owner- Laurel Champlin
Team #5- The Winning Team, Owner, Kellie Hinely
Team #6- Don Quijotes, Owner- Kili Crawford
Team #7- D Designs Donkey Dazzlers- Owner- Kent Taylor
Team #8- Hilljack Asses, Owner- Gilliam Show Horses
Team #9- Donkey Kong Gone Wrong, Owner- Bruce Vickery
Team #10- The Hard Asses, Owner- Arizona Sun Circuit Staff
In the end, it was Team #7 D Designs Donkey Dazzlers, owned by Kent Taylor, who took home the win. $24,600 was raised for charity!
