104 horses were narrowed down to one this evening at the 2015 Quarter Horse Congress. In the end, it was Steve Reams aboard Southerncomfortzone who were presented with the title of Green Western Pleasure Congress Champion.
Reams was in the saddle tonight for Wesley Smith, whose daughter Kaitlyn Smith recently showed “Georgie” to win the All Age Novice Horse/Novice Rider class their first time out at the NSBA World Show. Later this week, Kaitlyn will ride Georgie in Novice 13 and Under Western Pleasure and NYATT Western Pleasure. She is equally excited and nervous about their Congress debut.
For Reams, it’s not only this 3-year-old gelding’s smooth moves that make him a special horse; it’s his heart. “We saw him at Raleigh two years ago, and we fell in love with him, but it took us a long time to get him bought. Donnie Dickerson sold him to us. He’s been a super horse.”
Earlier this year, Reams and Georgie were the Reserve Champions in the Hylton Maiden Western Pleasure at the Virginia Classic and tied with Green and Momma Knows Best in the Novice Horse Western Pleasure class at The Little Futurity. Tonight, it was their turn to claim the top spot.
“He gave me his heart and soul,” Reams says. “He’s a show horse… any of them are special if they go in there and give you their heart, and he does.”
The Reserve Champion in tonight’s class was Rusty Green with Momma Knows Best for Lauren Love. Third place was Cole Baker with Consider Me Best for Marcie Budine. Fourth place was Brian Cox with Perfect 10 for Bryan Reger. Fifth place was Kenny Lakins with Certainly Classie for Stanley and Susan Scott. Sixth place was Jeff Long with RR A Moonlite. Seventh was Adam Wainscott with Cool Shoes Zippo. Eighth was Shannon Curl with Martinis Makame Crazy. Ninth was Shane Pope with I’m Single Tonight. Tenth was Katy Jo Zuidema with Rolling In Hot.
