Saturday has been a busy day for many exhibitors, and especially the youth competitors. But they persevered by showing at their best, such as in the morning showmanship classes.
After winning the Level 1 Youth Showmanship 13 & Under with Macs Good N Hot, aka Winston, Brynn Mathiason spoke about her showmanship run through happy tears.
Mathiason explains she’s been showing since she was about two years old, and she describes Winston as a little unicorn who is amazing. Today’s win was emotional for her, she explains. “This is my last chance to show novice, and we did it! We did everything we needed to do.”
For her winning pattern, she says everything went really well. “His back was nice and swift and he didn’t try to stop, his turn was pretty nice without having an overturn or under turn, and everything was really good!”
When she heard she won while waiting with the other 15 finalists, Mathiason said the feeling was indescribable, but the moment spoke to her heart. “It felt awesome,” she says.
Then Grace Riley won Youth 13 & Under Western Riding on A Certain Red Vette, aka Pistol, and Riley says she wasn’t expecting to win. “I thought we were going to place as one of the last, but we ended up being first, and I was shook,” she explains.
Riley has only had horses for about a year and a half, she explains, beginning by leasing a Paint/Pinto that was her best friend’s horse, and then going to Congress last year to watch her friends show.
Then with the help of Leigh and Leonard Berryhill, trainers Riley says she adores, they found Pistol. “For me, it was love at first sight. I loved him to death, so we ended up buying him and we ended up here,” she explains. “I’m so proud of him and I’m happy with him.” Riley plans on enjoying her summer and she also has The NSBA World Championship Show on her horizon.
