Jan. 22, 2014/Lee County, FL.- A horse is recuperating today following a brush with death in a muddy pond.

On Tuesday, January 21, 2014, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office Agricultural Crimes Unit responded to 6691 Patsy Drive in response to a horse stuck in a muddy pond. Upon arrival, it was immediately clear that the horse was in need of assistance. A Technical Large Animal Emergency Rescue Team was quickly assembled consisting of several Lee and Collier County Sheriff’s deputies.

The horse was stuck in a muddy flag pond approximately eight feet down an embankment. The horse had exhausted itself, was unable to stand, and needed assistance just to keep its head above the cold, muddy water.

By utilizing the rescue glide and other rescue equipment, the team was able to pull the horse to dry ground where it eventually walked away under its own power. The horse was given a guardedly optimistic prognosis from the on scene veterinarian.
