Lexington, Ky. – The United States Equestrian Federation mourns the loss of respected horseman Leo Conroy, who passed away on January 6, 2015.
“Leo was a great horseman who had a passion for the sport and worked tirelessly in all aspects of it as a trainer, judge, show manager, and valued member in numerous governance roles,” said President Chrystine Tauber. “He was an insightful, humorous and caring person whose wit and affable manner were invaluable. He will be greatly missed and we extend our condolences to his family.”
A mainstay in the hunter and jumper industry, Conroy trained many of the top ponies and junior hunters out of his Leo Conroy Stables for years. In addition, he was a much sought after judge, officiating at the most prestigious competitions throughout the United States including the FTI Consulting Winter Equestrian Festival, Devon Horse Show, Pennsylvania National Horse Show, Washington International Horse Show, National Horse Show, and US Pony Finals.
Conroy also had a large impact on the governance of equestrian sport, serving as the Assistant Executive Director of the American Horse Show Association as well as on its Board of Directors and as a member of numerous USEF and United States Hunter Jumper Association Committees. In addition, he was the Vice President of the National Horse Show.
In December, Conroy was awarded the 2014 USHJA Lifetime Achievement Award.
