While Paint Horse and Appaloosa enthusiasts gathered in Fort Worth, Texas to celebrate the 4th of July weekend at the Youth World Show, Quarter Horse competitors were having a party of their own to kick off the 2014 Big A and Stars N Stripes horse show in Conyers, Georgia.

During the patriotic-themed Welcome Party, family and friends were treated to a finger lickin’ BBQ dinner, the musical stylings of the Joe Yeoman Band, and an inflatable island waterslide, which was a huge hit among the kiddos, and a few horse trainers as well… When the party came to a close, it was time to prepare horses for the ten-day competition.

Judges for the show include Jennifer Thompson, Jonathan Meilleur, Tom Robertson, Jennifer Leckey, Tracy Willis, Jon Barry, John Boxell, Murray Griggs, Karen Graham, Judd Paul, Cindy Rucker, Debra Jones-Wright, David Connors, Sarah Good, and Holly Hover.

One of the main events that has taken place thus far is the National Quarter Horse League Big A Open Trail Derby on Sunday, which was sponsored by Sea Ridge Farms. After two rounds of competition, the big winner was Bruce Vickery aboard In Prinzziples Image for Kelly, Tim, and Chaney Getchell. The team earned $750 for their efforts and scored an impressive total of 496.5 points, an 80.5 and 83 respectively.

Coming in second and earning $550 was Chad Evans aboard Ginnin with a 491 combined total. Third place was Michael Colvin with PF Put It In Park. Fourth was Bruce Vickery with Zip Along Home. Fifth was Whitney Lagace with Platinum Sensation.

The Non-Pro version of the Trail Derby will take place Thursday, July 10th.

Tomorrow, Wednesday, July 9, will be an Off Day for the AQHA show, but that doesn’t mean the fun will come to a stop. There will be all sorts of activities on the schedule like a Painted Ponies competition, Dog Show, and an Exhibitor Party at the Grand Prix Stadium during the National Quarter Horse League Huntfield Derby.
