Ally Fink, Alyssa Donelson Recognized at APHA World Show For Sportsmanship Award and Member of the Year

Ally Fink, a 17-year-old from Coronado, California, was selected by an anonymous panel of judges as the 2015 Robyn Hanna Sportsmanship Award winner at the Youth World Show. Formerly known as the Superior Sportsmanship Award, this award was renamed by AjPHA President Meredith Milton in honor of the late Robyn Hanna; as part of her Presidential Service Project, Meredith raised more than $35,000 to endow the sportsmanship scholarship.

AQHYA Members Can Earn Scholarships By Raising/Training Foals Through Ranching Heritage Young Horse Development Program

For the project, accepted AQHYA members will receive a nominated weanling from an AQHA Ranching Heritage Breeder. From the weanling to yearling years, the AQHYA members work with and train their foals, then exhibit the foals at an AQHA show. Ultimately, the project participants have the chance to win back their investment in their foals through scholarships.

After all, the horse is a loud-colored overo, and he’s not just double-registered with the AQHA and the American Paint Horse Association, he’s also registered with the Pinto Horse Association of America.

46 states across the country have some form of an Equine Activity Liability Act. Are people in the four states without such a law – California, Maryland, Nevada and New York – worse off? If two recent California cases are any indication, courts have shown a willingness to dismiss lawsuits involving people who died in horse-related activities, even without an equine activity liability act.

Trey Dutton and Chase Peffly represented the gentlemen well by claiming the top two spots in Novice Youth Western Pleasure 13 and Under. Dutton rode Beyond Sensational to win the class, and Chase Peffly rode Justified Expense to win the Reserve World Champion title.

Club Foot in Horses

Most horsemen define a club foot as hoof and pastern angle of more than 60 degrees, making the foot more upright than normal. The affected hoof is usually stumpy with a short toe and long, upright heel. Contracture of the flexor muscles and deep digital flexor back tendon (which attaches to the coffin bone inside the hoof) results in the horse walking on the toe—and the heel area doesn’t get much wear. The hoof may have a steeper angle than the pastern; the hoof/pastern axis is often broken forward rather than straight.

14-year-old Rebecca Figueroa rode her 8-year-old gelding, Just Say Whoa, to win Novice Youth Trail 13 and Under in unanimous fashion. Figueroa and “Chevy” just came off a very successful Pinto World Championship Show where they were named 13 and Under Overall High Point Champions.
