The Little Lamb Family: Greener Pastures is the first book by Ohio Amateur Quarter Horse Association Amateur Laura Lamb, and the charming young children’s book will make parents’ hearts merry this season and beyond since it focuses on gratitude and family.
According to Christian Faith Publishing, Laura’s new children’s book “explores themes of safety, obedience, and gratitude in a way that children will understand and enjoy. Through relatable animal characters and engaging storytelling, young readers will learn valuable lessons about the importance of family and appreciating one’s circumstances.”
We visited with Laura about her venture, and here’s what she had to say:
Q: What inspired you to write a children’s story?
A: I was a preschool teacher at a private Christian school. I had three classes of 3-4 year olds, so I read lots of children’s books. I always thought, “I could do that!” I am now retired and have more time to do this. In addition to teaching, my husband and I raised lambs on our farm. So I just started writing down story ideas, using the sheep we had, and our barn set up in mind. Some of the best books that include moral stories are children’s books.
Q: What should we know about the book, such as audience age, plot, etc.?
A: This is a story about the little lamb family. The lambs learn lessons in being happy where they are and with what they have.
Lily, Rose, Ben, and Beau long for the green grass and clover in Mr. Bull’s pasture. They have been warned by their parents about the wolves and told to stay in their lot. Will they listen to their mother and father? Can Farmer Don make it in time to save them?
Q: What is your background as a writer? Is this your first book?
A: I don’t really have a background, except using a lot of books in my teaching. I wish to write books that teach moral lessons. This is my first book. I am hoping to make this a series.
Q: Tell us about you as a horseman, your horses’ names, etc.:
A: I grew up showing in 4H. I have always loved horses since I was a child. I have a two-year-old AQHA gelding named Only The Best R Lazy. He is in training and will be a maiden three-year-old for 2025. He is by No Doubt Im Lazy and out of the great mare, Onlythebestchocolate. I used to own the mare and was fortunate to get and keep her son.
I also have an AQHA gelding by Machine Made named Well Theres That. I have shown western pleasure, horsemanship, halter, showmanship and trail. I have been showing for about 10 years now, but broken up with two knee replacements and breast cancer surgery and treatment. I am now in remission and doing great! I am very fortunate to be able to show at this level and have the support of my husband.
Q: What else would you like our readers to know? Any advice for hopeful writers about getting published?
A: I have a very loving , supportive family. If you are a part of showing AQHA, you are very fortunate. Don’t take it for granted and don’t take your health for granted. As far as publishing, just keep writing and find a good publishing company. You don’t know unless you try!
