The 2015 Northwest Paint Horse Championship returns August 13–16, taking place in conjunction with the Zone 1 Show in Albany, Oregon. Part of APHA’s pilot Paint Horse Championship program last year, the Northwest Paint Horse Championship was a hit.

“The 2014 pilot Paint Horse Championship events generated lots of positive feedback and helped recognize and reward Paint Horse exhibitors from around the country,” Senior Director of Show & Contest Holly Slaughter said. “We are excited about the possibilities this program can create for APHA regional clubs and APHA show participation.”

APHA’s Paint Horse Championship show series encourages more exhibitors to attend zone shows by offering 15 specially selected classes sponsored by APHA. In order to be eligible, the exhibitor must reside in that specific zone, be a current APHA member, and neither horse nor exhibitor may have placed in the Top 5 of a halter class or Top 10 of a performance class at the APHA World Championship Show within the last five years.

The Northwest Paint Horse Championship classes will take place concurrently with their corresponding classes at the Zone 1 Zone Show. APHA provides the awards for the Paint Horse Championship classes, along with up to $3,500 for additional awards for Zone classes. Paint Horse Championship class winners receive a custom Gist Silversmiths belt buckle, and 2nd–10th place receive medallions. The Zone 1 show will also offer additional Rookie classes this year—watch their website zoneone-apha.com/show/ for more details.

“As we develop and refine these shows, they can become the gravitational center of a system of shows that welcome a greater scope of Paint Horse enthusiasts,” APHA Executive Director Billy Smith said. “We look forward to the future.”
