It’s been a busy day for Monica Hamm. To start off, she competed in the first class of the morning, Yearling Mares, where she took a sixth place finish with TF The Last Waltz. Then, she did a quick change before leading Miss Kittee to a unanimous win in the 2-Year-Old Mares class. “Kitty” is a sorrel mare by Western Gunslinger and out of Lady Is Irresistible.

“I knew this morning that I’d have back-to-back classes,” Hamm says. “No matter how you do, you just have to walk out, have a clean slate, and walk back in. I changed my outfit and hat real quick and went in the first slot. That was great because I knew she was going to be able to look right out and not have any distractions. It was going to make my job a little bit easier because she absolutely loves showing. She’s sweet but she can be spicy; that’s for sure!”

This is Hamm and Kitty’s first Youth World Show as a team. Hamm was hopeful her new mare would be able to place toward the top of the class, but, of course, there are no guarantees.

“We haven’t had her very long, and I haven’t shown her very much,” Hamm says. “I’m in school, so I only get to go to a couple of horse shows a year. She’s always great to show, and she’s so sweet. It’s easy to be able to come and pick up where you left off.”

“I was very hopeful but not confident by any means, because there are a lot of great horses any time you show. I knew that it would just depend on how I showed. I went out there and showed her to best of my ability.”

Hamm thoroughly enjoys competing with her longtime partner and multiple World and Congress Champion, RPL My Te Cheeerful, aka “Henry,” but she also enjoys focusing on developing and nurturing young prospects.

“It’s been a while since the last time we won with Henry, so I’ve worked very hard on the babies and the new horses that have the opportunity to show.”
