In 1965, Lyndon B. Johnson was president of the United States, Lucky Debonair won the Kentucky Derby, “The Sound of Music” opened in movie theaters and in Mississippi, a little horse show that would turn into the Dixie National was having its first run in Jackson. This year, the Dixie National Quarter Horse Show, also known as the Southern Classic, will celebrate 50 years February 16-22 with special events to remember the past and look to the future.
The Southern Classic is the premier event of the Mississippi Quarter Horse Association and scheduled for February 16-22 in Jackson. To help celebrate its anniversary, MQHA has made its Equestrians With Disabilities show two full days, February 10-11, filled with volunteers and smiles.
“Celebrating 50 years of the Southern Classic at the Dixie Nationals is not to say we are celebrating just a span of time and longevity of survival, but celebrating the many opportunities that these arenas hosted the ‘best of the best’ in the history of AQHA,” said Rob Seal, MQHA president. “American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame horses and horsemen, as well as world champion exhibitors from all disciplines have graced our entrance gates many times over, and we are excited when they still make us one of their premier not-to-miss circuits to attend.
“The exhibitors return year after year not only out of tradition but because our volunteer-run show boasts southern hospitality like no other shows can,” Seal said. “They return to not just see friends in the industry at a location but to feel like returning home to their southern horse show family. We look forward to seeing what the next 50 years will bring!”
The Southern Classic is jam-packed with exciting events, including an invitational team cutting, the Watson Quality Ford Roping Night Challenge, a $10,000-added freestyle reining, the Moonlight Madness Sale, plus the Southern Classic Horse Sale and much more.
