We had to break out the bubbly this afternoon at the 2020 AQHA World Show to celebrate Margaret Edward’s first World Championship win in Amateur Showmanship with Investing In Roans in a very competitive field. This is only Margaret and Lucy’s second trip to the AQHA World Show. Last year, they placed sixth.
But Margaret is certainly not knew to the show pen. She’s been competing for the past 20 years, starting out in 4-H and eventually working her way up to AQHA breed shows. She purchased Lucy as a two-year-old and taught the pretty, roan mare how to do her favorite event, Showmanship. Now, they compete in all of the all-around classes, from Horsemanship and Trail to Ranch Riding and Barrel Racing. They just achieved their Versatility Champion title this year. While that is certainly an accomplishment, nothing quite compares to having your name announced as the World Champion and receiving a golden globe.
“You hope for it and dream about it, but the competition is steep,” she says. “I’ve idolized a lot of the people out there, so this is pretty cool.”
Assisting Margaret with today’s class was her husband, Jeff, and Brad Kearns. She had a very specific plan from the beginning to ensure a good start to her pattern. “It was hard for me trotting of from the gate, because it was kind of different, so I thought if I could it that and have a good, clean stop that I felt like the rest would flow and happen. We were second to go. I knew my pattern, my lines, and where I wanted to be.”
“We practiced the back a lot because it was tough with all of the shape in it, so we made sure to count our steps and stay in line with the plants. I think we had a good pace, a lot of forward, and we showed well. She was right there every step, and we were in sync. I was really proud of her.”
While Margaret and Jeff will be enjoying a nice dinner out in Oklahoma City with their friends and family, Lucy has a bucketload of apples and peppermints waiting on her back at the stall. “We’re going to love on her and tell her how much we appreciate all of her hard work. She’s so kind and forgiving, and always tries hard.”
Reserve in the class was Lauren Stanley with Extremely Good Stuff. Third was Marcus Hanson with Good As Expected. Fourth was Tony Anderman with Solo Invested. Fifth was Johnna Letchworth with On The Roks.
