Mackenzie Preston and Brokers Lucky Kid Win Their First World Championship Title in 13 and Under Trail at 2013 AjPHA Youth World Show

The battle for the World Championship title in the 13 and Under Trail was hard fought, but in the end it was Mackenzie Preston and Brokers Lucky Kid who came away with the win. Coming in Reserve was Emily Drew riding Cadets Honor. Rounding out the top three was Kara Stark riding Regal Cadet.

Judging the class today were Holly Hover, Brad Kearns, Kathryn Kope, Stephanie Lynn, and Tracy Willis. Both Preston and Drew received one first, two seconds, one third, and one fourth, leaving the final score tied. It was up to the individual placings of the tiebreaker judge, Kathryn Kope, to determine the World Champion.

“I didn’t know who the tiebreaker was, and I thought I was going to get Reserve again,” Preston says. “Then, when I won, it was awesome, and I started to cry.”

“I thought my trail pattern was very nice. I thought my last maneuver, which was the jog overs, was very pretty. That was my favorite part. I was very proud of Denver because he didn’t eat the plant at the gate. That was very good of him. I thought the bridge was very good also.”

This Youth World Show is off to an excellent start for Preston who has already earned a Reserve World Championship in 13 and Under Hunter Under Saddle, third place in 13 and Under Reining, sixth place in 13 and Under Equitation, a Reserve Intermediate Championship in Equitation, and a finalist placing in Showmanship. Her win in Trail this afternoon is Preston’s first ever World Championship title. She has four prior Reserve World Champion titles.

Preston and Denver, aka “Porkchop,” will return this evening to compete in one of their signature classes, 13 and Under Western Riding. Later on in the show the pair will try their hand (and hoof) at Horsemanship and Western Pleasure.

“Denver can be very naughty to get ready, but most of the time he’s very nice,” she says. “Then, he’s usually perfect in the show pen. Mike [Davis] told me to hit my spots, and he also said good luck. I did hit all my spots, so that was good!”

When it comes time to celebrate her win, Preston plans to dine at a local hot spot, Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen, and do a little shopping with her mom and dad, who flew in all the way from Washington State to watch her compete. Denver will receive a few treats as well.

“Denver gets cookies, horse cookies,” she says. “He likes Cheetos, but he can’t have them until the end of the horse show. He also likes beer and every other food that is on this planet.”

As she reflects on her win today there are many people Preston would like to thank.

“I’d like to say thank you to my two horse trainers, Mike Davis and Kip Larson,” she says. “I would like to say thank you to Debbie and Brittany for doing my makeup, for making my outfit, and for doing my hair. I would like to say thank you to my mom, dad, and sister for being such good supporters and thank you to everyone who has supported me throughout this show.”
