Lane Kail and Battarang, aka “Judi,” won Wednesday’s $10,000 NSBA Maturity Western Pleasure- Ltd Non Pro Rider at the Championship Show, also winning them a check for $3,700.

Later in the day, Lane will also show one of his two ranch horses, Winn Like Flynn, in the $20,000 NSBA Non Pro Ranch Riding Challenge, and for Lane, switching gears to go back and forth between the two disciplines has helped him as a horseman and exhibitor.

“They’re two completely different disciplines, and my pleasure horse and ranch horses ride completely differently,” he says, “but I just think the experience of a lot of shows going back and forth to switch my gears a little bit has definitely helped me improve in both, too.”

Lane explains, “Now it also helps with not getting too stressed out and tense, because you have to go from one class and run into the other pen. You’ve got about 10 minutes before you’re going in, and I used to get all worked up and tense, and that kind of screwed up my ride.”

He says he has gotten better about just saying, ‘You know what? Breathe. Don’t change anything. Just be calm, be easy, and if it works, it works.’  Plus, he no longer has time to get stressed out with one class often right after the other.

As far as Battarang goes, what’s cool about him to Lane is that he such a good personality, and he’s sweet.  “He’s like a giant dog,” Lane says with a smile. “He always takes care of me, and he’s one of the most fun pleasure horses I’ve shown, and I ‘ve been doing this for a while. He has done a lot of good for me, and I don’t think anything could fill up the same shoes that he has.”

Lane says the gelding, who is named after someone special who passed away, likes just about anything to eat, so he will definitely be getting some treats.

More results from the class:
2nd: Blakely Abbott and Gotta Go Viral $2000
3rd: Jessica Baird and Thunderstruckk – $1500
4th: Brenda Lombard and Monkey Cee Monkey Do -$1000
5th: Yvonne Robeson and Start Ur Engines – $750
