Jane Humes partnered up with her 7-year-old, red roan gelding, Dunit On The Range, to win their first World Championship title this afternoon in Amateur Western Riding. Jane and “Rosco” scored a 235 to win the class. Placing Reserve was Kirsten Thomsen with Elis A Sleepin, scoring a 234. Rounding out the top three trophy winners was Jason Wanderer with Zippos Petite Prince, scoring a 230.5.
Rosco is by Open Range and out of Emerald Selection. He has been teamed up with Jane for the past three years. They currently compete under the guidance of Blake Weis.
Jane and Rosco have won Novice Amateur Western Riding at the Quarter Horse Congress, placed Reserve this year in Amateur Western Riding at the Congress, and have won at the NSBA World Championship Show, but this is their first World Show trophy. Last year, Jason Martin rode Rosco to a World Championship finish in Senior Western Riding here at the World Show.
Jane describes Rosco as a truly kind gelding who’s always seeking to please. “His name is Rosco, but I like to call him Spot, because he has an unusual spot on his forehead,” Jane says. “I call that his easy button. When I first walked into the class, I was thinking about that silly Staples commercial where they push the easy button.”
Rosco wasn’t in need of his easy button super powers this afternoon. Instead, Jane relied on his soft and supple lead changes and smooth maneuvering skills. “His rhythm is God-given,” she says. “It’s so round, smooth, and slow. It’s a very relaxing, soft pace. He covers a lot of ground while he’s going, but it doesn’t feel like he’s moving his legs. His changes have gotten so soft. There was one time in that pattern when I had to look down to see if he changed, because I couldn’t feel it. If you can’t feel it, it’s good!”
Looking forward to next year, Jane hopes to qualify in Amateur Trail as well as Amateur Western Riding.
