From NSBA:

The National Snaffle Bit Association is saddened to share that Albert “Skip” Salome, of Newark, Ohio, passed away on March 27.

Skip had been involved with the Ohio Quarter Horse Association and the All American Quarter Horse Congress since its inception. He served as OQHA president from 1993-1994, 2005-2006 and 2009-2010. Over the years, Skip served in every position available and on every association standing and ad-hoc committee OQHA had. Skip served as an All American Quarter Horse Congress Tri-Chairman for many years, helping to guide the Congress through many changes during its 56-year history. He was inducted into the Congress Hall Of Fame in 2008.

The Ohio Quarter Horse Association has noted: “Skip’s presence at the Congress and with OQHA was more than just a role; it was a legacy built on his love of the American Quarter Horse.”

In addition to his involvement in the horse world, Skip was a huge supporter of his community. In 2007, he began a family tradition of serving meals to the less fortunate on Christmas day – an event that has served nearly 20,000 meals since its inception – and providing free food and clothing to more than 100 Newark citizens each month. He was inducted into the Central Ohio Senior Citizens Hall of Fame in 2019.

Skip also served on the Ohio State Racing Commission, the Ohio Commodores, the Kiwanis Club of Newark, St. Vincent De Paul, YMCA, Newark Jaycees, Moundbuilders Country Club, Newark Rotary Club and the Patricia and Herbert Murphy Foundation. He earned many awards for his public service at the state and local level.

Skip and his wife, Carol, developed multiple Frisch’s and Lee’s Famous Recipe restaurants around Central Ohio and also owned Heritage Catering. In addition to his wife, Skip is survived by his children, Todd (Laura) Salome, Kelli (Manuel) Diaz and Cathey (Todd) Pangborn, as well as eight grandchildren, two great grandchildren and his extended family, who were his pride and joy.

Family and friends may visit Monday, April 1, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Henderson Van Atta Stickle Funeral Home, 59 East Church Street, Newark, Ohio 443055 or Tuesday, April 2, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at Second Presbyterian Church, 42 East Church Street, Newark, Ohio 43055. A Celebration Of Life will be held on Saturday, April 6, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Elks Lodge, 73 North Third Street, Newark, Ohio 43055.
