14The discipline of Ranch Riding tends to lend itself to a casual, more laid back outfit: an oxford shirt, starched jeans, cowboy hat, boots, and a belt. While many exhibitors may invest in a pair of well-made chinks or armitas, a more cost-effective, simple, and unique alternative to dressing up any ranch outfit is the “wild rag” or cowboy scarf.

The wild rag is not only a statement piece, but it’s historically been known as a staple for cowboys living in a variety of climates. They provide warmth in the winter, but also protect riders from the sun, wind, and dust. Available in a wide array of sizes, colors, prints, and fabrics, they’re built to suit any style or outfit. Silk is the most commonly used fabric fiber, due to its lightweight, breathability, and moisture wicking qualities. It also softens with wear and prints present on both sides.

Once you purchase a wild rag, you may be wondering how to wear it. The Equine Chronicle has gathered several ideas with stepby-step instructions to help you choose a style that fits your cowboy personality. The following instructions are best used with a standard 36” x 36” silk rag.

Classic Square Knot

Step 1:Fold the scarf in half diagonally creating a triangle. With one point, facing out, place the fold on your chin. By placing the fold on your chin you will assure that you have some breathing room and your neck is fully covered.

Step 2: Bring the ends around the back of the neck, cross, and bring back to the front.

Step 3: Tie two overhand knots. First, right over left and twist. Then, left over right and twist.

Step 4: Remove the fold from your chin.

For a simpler take, use an 18” x 18” wild rag and skip Step 2.
