He’s not a doctor, but he plays one on TV. In the cowboy world, actor James Pickens Jr. is just another roper who also happens to be putting on his fifth annual James Pickens Jr. Foundation Charity Roping Event.

Pickens, who plays Dr. Richard Webber on the ABC drama “Grey’s Anatomy,” is getting ready to host the annual open roping charity event, which is in association with the Classic Cowboy Tour on April 22 on the historic Tejon Ranch in Lebec, California.

The event will feature open roping with a five-steer progressive after two, which is $300 per man. Prior to the open roping will be a pro-amateur roping competition with sign-up beginning at 9 a.m. and the event starting at 10 a.m. All contestants must be 30 years or older to participate.

Part of all proceeds from the event will benefit the JPJ Foundation.

The event will have $5,000 of added money with no stock charge. Trophy buckles will be awarded for winners of the Calcutta and second in the average; trophy saddles will be awarded for first in the average; and sponsorship prizes will be awarded for fastest times.

The goal of The James Pickens Jr. Foundation is to bring increased value to the lives of people of this generation and the generations that follow. The organization seeks, selects, supports and partners with individuals who work tirelessly to revitalize local communities.
