EC NOTE: An Equine Production Show Management team indicated that stalls were up 150, entries were up over 2,100, and the total entry count was 12,000 entries for all divisions/judges.
The Florida Gold Coast Quarter Horse Circuit celebrated another successful year with a tsunami of entries throughout 2020’s five-day event, which was an extra day due to the incredible popularity of the event. Taking place at the Bob Thomas Equestrian Center, top Quarter Horses and riders from North America and Europe traveled to the Florida State Fairgrounds to compete for coveted High Point awards, Circuit Champion awards and valuable year-end points.
High Point winners received a Porta Cool Jetstream 220 Cooler worth $999.95, and Reserve High Point honorees received a beautiful satin cooler while third place overall received a custom garment bag.
Impressively, the Bob and Karen Johnson Quarter Horse barn took home two Porta Cool coolers. Bob was the High Point winner in Versatility Ranch Horse (VRH) Open with A Busy Affair, and his student, Anna Mackay, captured the championship on Gunna Wreckya in the VRH Youth for the second consecutive year. Bob’s wife, Karen, was the Reserve Champion in the VRH Open on Gotta Hot Gun.
Taylor Kungle and Krymsun Belle marked their final year in the Novice Amateur classes by taking home one of the Porta Cool coolers as the High Point Champion. She is looking forward to moving up to the Amateur division next year.
Sandy Vargo won Senior High Point Award with her 8-year-old gelding, Dancin N The Dirt. Although the Ohio resident hands the reins over to her trainer Chuck Briggs and her good friend Terrie Booth in the show ring, she enjoys their victories as much as if she were in the saddle.
Tuesday’s classes concluded the 2020 Florida Gold Coast Quarter Horse Circuit, with plenty of High Point awards, Circuit Champion awards and year-end points awarded to conclude the show on a high note.
FROM THE WINNER’S CIRCLE
Bob Johnson (Burns, Tennessee) and A Busy Affair (Steve & Kathy Headley, owners)
Versatility Ranch Horse Open High Point Award Champion
On competing at the Florida Gold Coast Quarter Horse Circuit: “We have come here for the last three years and the VRH division has really grown in that time. The numbers now are incredible and that makes it really fun. The people who ride VRH have a lot of fun. We cheer for each other and just enjoy the whole experience.”
On his horse, A Busy Affair: “She’s a pretty cute mare. She’s won at the All American Congress Show, she won at AQHA World’s, she’s going to win the Honor Roll for the year, and she won here. My wife, Karen, won the reserve so we’ve had a pretty good time here.”
Anna Mackay, 18 (Oak Ridge, Tennessee) and Gunna Wreckya (Michael Mackay, owner)
Versatility Ranch Horse Youth High Point Award Winner
On winning the High Point Award at the Florida Gold Coast Quarter Horse Circuit with Gunna Wreckya: “It means a lot to win with her, because I don’t get to ride as much as I would like. I just feel so blessed to come here and do so well. I’ve had this horse for about three years now. It took a very long time for us to click and now we’re together and we’re having such a fun time showing. He’s such a goofball, but I love him to death.”
Taylor Kungle (Hampstead, North Carolina) and Krymsun Belle (Mallory Vroegh, owner) Level 1/Novice Amateur High Point Award Champion
On winning the High Point Award at the Florida Gold Coast Quarter Horse Circuit with Krymsun Belle: “We’ve had a really great year. This is my last show with Belle as a Novice Amateur, so it’s really special that we ended the year on such a high note. She’s such a good girl. I love doing the Horsemanship with her. She’s so sweet. She really likes to go out there and show and do her job. She’s the best.”
Sandy Vargo (Plain City, Ohio), Owner of Dancin N The Dirt- Senior High Point Award Winner
On winning the High Point Award with Dancin N The Dirt: “It’s awesome to win the High Point. I love to win. My horse is so fun and he is truly wonderful. He is just special. He’s the winningest horse! I have had him for years. He has many quirks, but I love him, and he loves me! Terrie and I share him, we’re like sisters. We’ve known each other for a long time, so it’s fun for me to watch her ride him and do so well.”
