The first American Quarter Horse Association-approved para-reining classes are slated for January 30-31 at the Arizona Sun Circuit in Scottsdale. The classes will also be approved by World Para Reining and the first event in the WPR series. A championship saddle, top-10 awards and world champion title will be awarded at the end of the series.
Para-reining made its debut during the 2013 AQHA World Championship Show, and interest in the sport continues to grow. For 2014, AQHA adopted para-reining rules in collaboration with USA Reining and the National Reining Horse Association. Those rules were revised after the 2014 test year and with the cooperation of the United States Para-Equestrian Association with the goal of making para-reining a nationally recognized sport in 2015.
