Tim Finkenbinder was at the lead of 2-year-old gelding, Non Smokin Kid, today for Marvin and Pearl Wieneke of Minnesota. This is not only the Wieneke family’s first World Championship title, they bred and raised the past three generations that lead to the gelding they call “Nacho.” He is a bay gelding by Not Kiddin Me and out of Blue Smokey Illusion.
“I raised him, and I raised his mother, and I raised her mother,” Marvin says. “We call him Nacho, and his brother is Sirloin. I was in the meat business for 40 years, so… We always called the mother, Smokey, and we got the ‘kid’ from Not Kiddin.”
Pearl Wieneke became a little misty-eyed as she remarked on achieving their first World Championship title with a homebred foal.
“We’ve been fourth before, but never been in the hardware, so this has been exciting,” she says. “We started showing horses in 2000. We had some horses before that but never did any showing.”
Assisting in the win today was professional handler, Tim Finkenbinder, and trainer, Brian Ellsworth. This also marks Ellsworth’s first AQHA World Champion title.
“Brian has been getting him ready,” Marvin says. “This was his first World title too. He’s done a good job. Out here, I didn’t think anything would beat Nacho. Tim did a super good job of showing him. Nacho’s topline and neck are just beautiful with a nice skinny throat latch, and he’s still growing.”
If Nacho stays in the family, Marvin is looking forward to showing the horse in the amateur division next year. Meanwhile, it might be time to dip into those same bloodlines to find a Queso to go with that Nacho and Sirloin.
