Exciting Paint Racing Legislation Passes in Kentucky

The thundering sound of painted hooves could be ringing in the bluegrass state soon, thanks to recently passed legislation.
HB 165, “An Act Relating to Paint Horses,” was passed by the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky and signed into law by Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear on March 24.
Previously excluded from racing in Kentucky, Paints will now be able to compete in sprint-style races alongside Appaloosas. Other Paint racing venues are currently located in Idaho, Oklahoma, Texas, Wyoming and Canada.
“We’re committed to Paint racing, and this is just one good example of that commitment,” APHA Executive Director Billy Smith said. “We hope this leads to an exciting growth of Paint racing in Kentucky soon.”
Further bolstering the effort is plans by the Keeneland Association, Inc., to create a sprint-style racing track in Corbin, Kentucky. Though plans have not yet been finalized, a sprint-exclusive track would add additional appeal for Paints to compete.
