01I’m sure you’ve heard about the best way to make $1,000 in the horse industry? Start with $5,000. Unfortunately, there is a vein of truth in that statement. Many of us work unreasonably hard throughout the week to pour nearly all of our disposable income into some activity involving our equine companions each weekend. But this industry that you love so dearly has much more to offer than just recreation. Many equine enthusiasts have successfully melded their horse passion into a lifelong career. What many don’t realize is that there are far more career opportunities beyond being a horse trainer or veterinarian. If you scratch beyond the surface, the depth of career choices may surprise you.

First things first, let us explore the industry, by numbers. According to a recent nationwide study conducted by the American Horse Council, there are 9.2 million horses in the United States. 4.6 million Americans are involved in the industry as horse owners, service providers, employees, and volunteers. Tens of millions more participate as spectators. The horse industry has a direct economic effect on the U.S. of $39 billion annually.

Now, take a step back and consider spending by industry suppliers and employees; the U.S. equine industry has a $102 billion impact on the U.S. economy. The industry directly provides 460,000 full-time equivalent jobs. Spending by suppliers and employees generates additional jobs for a total employment impact of 1.4 million full-time equivalent jobs. Think the equine industry is an elitist sport? Think again. Of the 2 million Americans that own horses, approximately 34% of have a household income of less than $50,000 and 28% have an annual income of over $100,000. 46% of horse owners have an income of between $25,000 to $75,000.

What does all of this mean? It means opportunity. The U.S. equine industry is brimming with careers for just about every skill level, income bracket, and area of interest. Let us explore some of the many career opportunities this industry offers.
