Tonight was the main event: the moment everyone waits three long weeks for here in Columbus Ohio. Tonight was The Equine Chronicle Masters, and some of the top riders in the country brought out their very best two-year-olds for the chance to win huge checks, great prizes, and of course bragging rights.

First up, Deanna Searles rode Best Jazz Album Yet to win the 2-Year-Old Hunter Under Saddle in fine fashion. Deanna and the pretty bay gelding won $10,000 for being named the champion and also took home $5,000 for the limited win. That total put Deanna over the quarter of a million dollar mark in NSBA earnings, a prestigious designation she wasn’t expecting to receive tonight.

headley_580x502“I had no idea!” she says. “I’m honored and ecstatic that it happened.”

Searles2Best Jazz Album Yet is by Allocate Your Assets and out of Jazzy Details, a mare that has since passed away. “We raised his siblings, and they’ve all done very well, one winning the Masters and then going on to have successful show careers. He is the last baby out of Jazzy, because she died when he was born. We have a mini donkey at home, and she raised him.”

When Deanna first saw this strapping gelding loping out in the field, she had an inclination he might have what it takes to be a Masters contender. “As he was loping out in the field, he picked himself up and carried himself well. He had the look. It took him a little while to mature, but his body just floated. He’s very laid-back and just a good-minded horse.”

Aaron Moses

In the 2-Year-Old Western Pleasure, Aaron Moses rode VS The First Lady to win for Kristen and Wesley Galyean. After years of watching his idols win the Masters, Aaron finally achieved what he describes as one of his biggest career goals.

“Kennedy” is by VS Code Red and out of Cool Lookin Lady. “Kristen and Wesley sent her to me back in December when I first started out on my own. I started riding her then.”

Moseslope“I’ve always thought she was really talented, from the first day when she was loping around in the round pen. My girlfriend, Courtney, and I were watching her, and we said, ‘Wow. That’s a nice horse.’ She’s always been great legged and very talented.”

Because Aaron wasn’t sure how Kennedy would react to the large crowd in the stands tonight, he admits that she was a bit more tired than he would’ve liked. “I had to work for it the whole way around, because she was a little tired, but she was very good.”

MosesComing up next, Aaron and Kennedy will be headed to the AQHA World Show, and taking their $25,000 with them.
